"Abramovich would have sent me to Siberia if i came fourth" - Former Chelsea coach Avram Grant
Former Chelsea coach, Avram Grant has joked he would have been "sent to Siberia" by Roman Abramovich had he led Chelsea to a fourth-placed finish just like Frank Lampard did with the club this season. Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Wolves on the final day of the season placed them in fourth position and ensured Lampard's side will be playing in the Champions League next season. In his only season at the club in 2007-08, Grant guided Chelsea to a second-placed finish in the Premier League, while the club lost to Tottenham in the EFL Cup final before losing to Manchester United on penalties in the Champions League final. Grant was immediately sacked after the Champions League finale, and now says Abramovich did not give him such liberty back in his time like he is giving to Lampard now."I think it's a good season, especially compared to how it began, without being allowed to buy players," Grant told Stats Perform News.
"Compared to the requirement of Roman Abramovich, if I told him some years ago that fourth place would be good for him, probably he would send me to Siberia, but because of the situation before, I think it's a good place. For Frank, I think it's a big achievement."It's his first year as a coach in the Premier League. Of course, he was a player with a lot of experience, but you cannot compare a player to a manager, and I think he's managed the team very well."A lot of young players and he knew how to play them, how to give them a rest and when to push them. It's a good base for the future, I was very pleased with his performance."Grant also believes Lampard always had the right mentality as a player to become a top-level coach."I was sure, because he was always a leader. When you spoke with him, he had a different view about football," Grant said."In my team at Chelsea there was a lot of leaders. I thought [Michael] Ballack would be a good coach, Didier [Drogba], John Terry, because there was a good personality and a lot of knowledge about football."Of course, having the knowledge is not the same, you have to pass the knowledge to players, you have to deal with the owner, the media, you have to deal with the supporters, but at the end of the day, you depend on the performance on the pitch – it's results, especially at the top."The post "Abramovich would have sent me to Siberia if i came fourth" - Former Chelsea coach Avram Grant appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.from https://ift.tt/33et4Mu

Top Republicans in the House of Representatives and Senate have openly dismissed President Donald Trump's suggestion on Thursday July30, that November's presidential election should be delayed till when people can go out and vote safely without fear of the Covid-19 pandemic. On Thursday, Trump tweeted, "With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???"
Mail-in voting is a type of voting system where people don't have to go to the voting booth, as they can vote from the safety of their homes using mails. Trump fearful of loosing at the polls to Biden this November has argued that the election could be marred by large scale rigging and voting irregularities. According to the Republicans, most of them Trump allies, the President has no authority to change the voting date because the Constitution gives Congress the power to set the date for voting. Republican Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming said in an interview on Fox Business on Friday July 30; "No, we're not going to delay the election," adding, "We're going to have the election completed and voting completed by Election Day.""I don't think that's a particularly good idea." Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican said to CNN"I think that's probably a statement that gets some press attention, but I doubt it gets any serious traction," "I think we've had elections every November since about 1788, and I expect that will be the case again this year," Majority Whip Sen. John Thune, a member of Republican leadership told CNN when asked about Trump's tweet. GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois tweeted, "Reminder: Election dates are set by Congress. And I will oppose any attempts to delay the #2020Election." House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy of California said;"Never in the history of federal elections have we ever not held an election and we should go forward with our election," "No way should we ever not hold our election on the day that we have it." Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell responding to his tweet, said in an interview with WNKY."Never in the history of the country, through wars, depressions and the Civil War, have we ever not had a federally-scheduled election on time. We'll find a way to do that again this November 3rd," the majority leader said Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz said, "Election fraud is a serious problem we need to stop it and fight it, but no the election should not be delayed." Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida said of Trump's tweet, "I wish he hadn't said that, but it's not going to change: We are going to have an election in November and people should have confidence in it." Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, said: "The election is going to happen in November period.""The election is going to be held in November. Absentee ballots in North Carolina are strongly encouraged, as has the President encouraged them. The safe side to a mail-in vote, I hope we get it mostly... Because otherwise they're gonna undermine the integrity of the election," Senate Finance Committee chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa said; All I can say is that, it doesn't matter what one individual in this country says. We still are a country based on the rule of law. And we must follow the law until either the Constitution is changed or until the law is changed." House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, also joined in with her own rebuttal, posting a tweet quoting Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution, that gives Congress the authority to "determine the Time of choosing the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Vote."

The Commissioner of Police (CP) Rivers state, Joseph Mukan has transferred the case of alleged rape on a 32-year-old widow by a policeman to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The rape victim alleged that a four-man police team arrested her on Tuesday night, July 28 for not wearing a face mask, but, rather than take her to the station, they took her to a guest house where one of them named Inspector Peter Iba raped her all night “at gunpoint” (read here). She said they arrested her at Sakpenwan, Tai Local Government Area, for not wearing face mask while she was in transit on a Port Harcourt bound vehicle from Bori. CP Mukan on Thursday opened investigations into the matter with summon on the four man police team and the victim, transferring the case file to the SCID after hearing from both parties. Police Spokesman, Rivers Command, SP Nnamdi Omoni, stated that, “The CP ordered the matter investigated. She (victim) made her statement yesterday (Wednesday) and today (Thursday) we were at Tai Police Station. Unfortunately the men that had encounter with the lady are not from Tai Police Station as she insinuated. They were rather from Mobile Police Base 56 at Bori. “Today all the parties were here. After hearing from them, the matter is being investigated. CP has directed transfer of case file to SCID for further investigations at the end of which the report will be made public. “They (suspects) made a lot of denials and confessions, but the investigations will reveal what happened. Witnesses will be involved, scene of crime visited and other things to follow in course of investigations.” He said the “accused officers were with the Rivers Police Command. Definitely they will be invited to the SCID and we will keep the public informed”.The post

Award winning actor, Desmond Elliot, has partnered with reputable crowdfunding platform, Giving.Ng to lend his voice in support of health workers across the country. Desmond, who is also a member of the Lagos State house of Assembly shared a video on his Instagram page stating that there is a need for those taking care of the sick to also be taken care of. Giving.Ng announced a crowdfunding campaign to support health workers who are on the front-line of the coronavirus pandemic a few weeks ago. The fund was set up to help take care of their hazard allowances as most of them in Nigeria earn just N5,000(appr. $14) monthly. The Fund pays them a minimum of one hundred thousand naira monthly and is governed by a diverse and multi-sectoral board led by Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, a leading public health practitioner. According to Olapeju Ibekwe, the project manager, Giving.Ng, she noted that as the cases of infected Nigerians continue rising and the public is advised to practice social distancing, health workers have no choice but to go daily to take care of the sick.‘Some of them have not hugged their wives and children in the past 3 months just to protect their family from being infected. They definitely need our support. We are proud to partner with notable Nigerians like Desmond Elliot at this critical time for the benefit of frontline workers fighting the COVID-19 scourge. It is inspiring to know that there are people out there that still care. We are grateful for the partnership and look forward to more public figures standing up to be counted at this time.’ We also want to use this opportunity to call on Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora, to step up and show their support by donating towards the welfare of our local frontline health workers. A mother-of-five, Nafisa Ibrahim, 38, was found dead in her room in Kaduna State and her relations have accused her husband of killing her. Her husband, a security guard identified as Nuhu, is allegedly on the run after his wife was found dead in their single room apartment in Mahuta, Igabi Local Government area of Kaduna. Malam Mohammed Bashir, who claimed to be a guardian to the deceased, stated that the husband is at large. Speaking to journalists at Mahuta community, he said: "The incident happened on Tuesday at the house where her husband, Nuhu, worked as a security guard. “Her relations came from Plateau State over the issue. The husband and his late wife shared the same room in the uncompleted building, while the daughters stayed in a different room. No one can tell who killed her but her relations point an accusing finger at the husband. He ran away. “All his personal belongings were removed from the room. We suspect him because they slept together in the room but when his wife’s body was found, he was nowhere to be found. “Her daughter discovered the lifeless body inside the one-apartment room where they were squatting with the husband. She tried to wake the mother up thinking she was still asleep, but when she realised she was not moving, she ran out of the room crying. She rushed to my house and told me that her mother was dead. "So, I went to the house and discovered that she was dead. We saw a rope tightened on her neck which made us believe that she was murdered. “As her guardian, I was aware that they used to have altercations and I always intervened. She left five children, but four of the children were from a previous marriage, while a daughter belongs to the current husband." The post

Two commuters died on Sunday, July 26, when a 20-feet container fell on a commercial bus in Ojota, Lagos, crushing them (read here). One of the victims has been identified as Chidinma Ajoku, aka Deedee, a staff of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN. Chidinma was on her way home from work with a male colleague when tragedy struck. According to her mother, the bus Chidinma was in had stopped to either drop or pick passengers when a speeding trailer carrying a 20-feet container fell and the container landed on the bus.
Many people were injured but Chidinma and her male colleague died. The bereaved mum narrated her anguish and fear as she waited all night for her daughter's return only to be informed the following day that there was an accident and the casualties had been taken to the hospital. When she got to the hospital, she was told her daughter isn't one of those brought in and she was referred to another hospital in Yaba. The second hospital referred her to the morgue where she saw her daughter's body. Crying, the mother asked the state government to do something about the tankers and trailers on the road so that no life will be lost again in this way.
A Go Fund Me has been created to help pay for Chidinma's burial.

Tamar Braxton is speaking out for the first time since being hospitalized following a possible suicide attempt. The reality star was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles after she was found unresponsive by her Nigerian boyfriend David Adefeso in her hotel room on Thursday, July 16.
Adefeso called 911 to report his girlfriend had been drinking before she took an unknown amount of prescription pills following a possible suicide attempt. He explained that she was having issues with the TV network (We TV) that airs her reality show, 'Get Ya Life!' The 43-year-old "Braxton Family Values" star has now taken to Instagram to issue a lengthy statement, where she addressed some of her personal problems and reality television’s impact on her mental health. She began her post by thanking her fans for their support, writing : "Thank you to each and every individual who has prayed for me, thought of me, sent me their love and has showered me with their support. In this present moment, it is my only responsibility to be real with myself and to be real with the ones who truly love me and care for my healing. I have without fail, shared with you my brightest days, and I know that sharing with you what has been my darkest will be the light for any man or woman who is feeling the same defeat I felt just only a week ago. " She then opened up on the pressures of her career and her reality TV series. "Every one of us has a desire, whether small or big, to make it out of where we come from to an ideal future place that includes, freedom to be who we choose, security for our children and families, and fortune to share with the ones we love. We believe these things can co-exist with just being happy. I believed that, that as a black woman, as an artist, an influence, a personality I could shape my world, and with whom I believed to be my partners, they could help me share my world." "Over the past 11 years there were promises made to protect and portray my story, with the authenticity and honesty I gave. I was betrayed, taken advantage of, overworked, and underpaid. " "I wrote a letter over 2 months ago asking to be freed from what I believed was excessive and unfair. I explained in personal detail the demise I was experiencing. My cry for help went totally ignored. " "However, the demands persisted. It was my spirit, and my soul that was tainted the most. There are a few things I count on most to be, a good mother, a good daughter, a good partner, a good sister, and a good person. Who I was, begun to mean little to nothing, because it would only be how I was portrayed on television that would matter." "It was witnessing the slow death of the woman I became, that discouraged my will to fight. I felt like I was no longer living, I was existing for the purpose of a corporations gain and ratings, and that killed me." Ending her post, Braxton declared that “Mental illness is real. We have to normalize acknowledging it and stop associating it with shame and humiliation. The pain that I have experienced over the past 11 years has slowly ate away at my spirit and my mental." The singer/actress then promised that she will now do “everything in my power to aid those from mental illness, including those of us who’s mental illness was only a result from the toxic systematic bondage that dwells television.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tamar Braxton (@tamarbraxton) on Jul 30, 2020 at 12:57pm PDTThe post
