Van Gogh painting worth £5m stolen from Dutch museum currently closed due to coronavirus
A painting by Vincent van Gogh has been stolen from a Dutch museum currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The museum was closed on March 2 in line with national measures to halt the spread of the coronavirus. Police said the painting with an estimated value of up to £5m was stolen on Monday at the Singer Laren Museum in what appeared to be a smash-and-grab from the front entrance. During a press conference broadcast on Youtube, the museum’s director, Jan Rudolph de Lorm, said he was “incredibly pissed off” after thieves stole the painting, which had been on loan from the Groninger Museum.  De Lorm said: “This is exactly what you don’t want as a museum that has a painting on loan. “A beautiful and moving painting by one of our greatest painters, stolen from the community … This must come back as soon as possible, so that we can enjoy and be comforted by this beautiful art again. Art deserves to be seen and shared by us, the community.” Arthur Brandt, an art detective, told the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper that the artwork could be worth up to €6m (£5m).  The painting was stolen on the day Van Gogh was born 167 years ago.  The post Van Gogh painting worth 5m stolen from Dutch museum currently closed due to coronavirus appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Coronavirus: British Airways grounds all flights to and from Gatwick Airport
Coronavirus: British Airways grounds all flights to and from GatwickAirportBritish Airways has grounded all flights to and from Gatwick Airport due to coronavirus but still operate from London Heathrow at a severely reduced schedule. This is due to the ‘considerable restrictions and challenging market environment’ amid the coronavirus pandemic, a spokesperson said. They continued: ‘Like many other airlines, we will temporarily suspend our flying schedule at Gatwick. We are contacting affected customers to discuss their options.’The decision by BA to shut its Gatwick operation came hours after easyJet grounded its entire fleet of 330 aircraft. Weeks ago,  British Airways  Chief Executive Alex Cruz admitted coronavirus is threatening the company's operation as staff were told there will be job cuts because of the 'worsening' worldwide pandemic. He wrote to all 45,000 workers saying the virus' relentless spread is a crisis 'of global proportions like no other we have known', more serious than the 2008 financial crash, SARS or 9/11. Mr Cruz warned people would be put out of work and planes would be grounded 'like they have never had to do before' and urged: 'Please do not underestimate the seriousness of this for our company' in a message entitled 'the survival of British Airways'.The post Coronavirus: British Airways grounds all flights to and from GatwickAirport appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

No Country in the world can boast of having enough ventilators- Minister of Health Osagie Ehanire

No Country in the world can boast of having enough ventilators- Minister of Health Osagie Ehanire
As the nation continues to battle the Coronavirus scourge, Nigeria's Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, has said that no country in the world can boast of having enough ventilators within their healthcare system. A ventilator is a machine designed to provide mechanical ventilation by moving breathable air in and out of the lungs, to deliver breaths to a patient who is physically unable to breathe, or breathing insufficiently. The machine is attached to a tube inserted in the patient’s airway so it can deliver air into the lungs. Nigeria has less than 500 ventilators in the whole Federation, a matter that is of great concern to many Nigerians. However while speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Ehanire said this isn't a cause for alarm as only one of the Coronavirus cases in Nigeria requires the use of a ventilator. “The question of ventilators;  yes we are addressing it. There is no country in this world that has enough ventilators. Of all the cases we have had so far only one requires a ventilator. Some require just Oxygen. Probably less than four per cent of the cases we are dealing with require ventilators.“Government is also taking inventory of what each state requires. The number of ventilators you have in the country does not decide your rate of survival.” he said The Minister at the press briefing said efforts are being made to establish testing labs for the infectious disease in Abakiliki, Kaduna, Kano, Maiduguri, Port Harcourt and Sokoto within the next three weeks.  The post No Country in the world can boast of having enough ventilators- Minister of Health Osagie Ehanire appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Singer Aaron Carter's girlfriend arrested for domestic violence after scratching his arm

Singer Aaron Carter's girlfriend arrested for domestic violence after scratching his arm
Aaron Carter's girlfriend, Melanie Martin, has been arrested for suspicion of domestic violence. The police were called to the singer's Lancaster, California, home on Sunday night when a fight allegedly broke out between the couple. According to TMZ, cops were called to the residence at 11pm and found visible marks on Carter's body. The singer claimed that he and Melanie got into a physical altercation and she allegedly scratched him. Police determined Melanie to be the aggressor and she was taken into custody. Carter told TMZ that Melanie informed him she's pregnant right before they got into the argument that led to her getting arrested. He says he thinks she's lying and there's no chance they're getting back together. After the alleged altercation, Carter took to Twitter to send a strong message about domestic violence.  "You don't have to wait for someone to treat you bad repeatedly. All it takes is once, and if they get away with it that once, if they know they can treat you like that, then it sets the pattern for the future," he tweeted.   "So sad, ;( I hope she gets the help she needs. no one deserves domestic abuse female OR MALE #DomesticAbuse #Cheater she literally chocked [sic] me out... I'm devastated," he wrote in another tweet.   Carter and Martin first went public with their relationship in January, posting a series of loved-up photos and videos on Instagram. Then, within weeks, Carter had tattooed her name above his right eyebrow.  This isn't the first time Carter has claimed to have been physically assaulted by a partner. Last year, he took out a restraining order against then-girlfriend Lina Valentina after she allegedly assaulted him on "several" occasions. The post Singer Aaron Carter's girlfriend arrested for domestic violence after scratching his arm appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Naira crashes, now exchanging at N412 for a dollar lindaikejisblogThe Nigerian Naira plunged further in value on Monday March 30, as it exchanged at N412 for a dollar following a temporary suspension of sale of forex to the Bureau De Change operators in the country by the Central Bank of Nigeria.  Recall that the apex bank had pegged the exchange rate of the Naira at N380 to the dollar, a move it insisted was not a devaluation of the Nigerian currency. The CBN however granted the Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria its request of going on holiday due to challenges in the local and global economies over the coronavirus pandemic.  While the Naira has crashed in its value due to the low price of crude oil in the international market in recent times, BDC operators have disclosed that there has been a drastic decline in demand for forex due to the impact of coronavirus on the economy. The financial market stakeholders also disclosed that businesses are down and many people are not travelling. The post Naira crashes, now exchanging at N412 for a dollar appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Rihanna vows to have four kids with or without a partner as she graces the cover of British Vogue
Rihanna vows to have four kids with or without a partner as she graces the cover of British VogueBarbadian singer and businesswoman, Rihanna has made history by becoming the first person to grace the cover of British Vogue in a durag for a high-fashion shoot. Speaking with the magazine, the 32-year-old opened up on her plans to start her family as well as her upcoming projects. Sharing her personal aspirations, the singer revealed she's open to raising 'three or four children' alone if she doesn't find The One, telling the publication in its May issue: 'Would I do it on my own? Hell yeah!'  Rihanna, who split from Saudi billionaire Hassan Jameel in January following a three-year romance, added: 'I'll have kids - three or four of 'em'.  Hailing 'love' as the most fundamental element in being a parent, Rihanna said: 'Hell yeah, I feel like society makes me want to feel like 'Oh you got it wrong …' They diminish you as a mother, [if] there's not a dad in your kid's lives.  'But the only thing that matters is happiness, that's the only healthy relationship between a parent and a child. That's the only thing that can raise a child truly, is love.'  On her plans to release new music, the fashion designer said she's working 'aggressively' on new music. She explained: 'I can't say when I'm going to drop … but I am very aggressively working on music. 'I don't want all my albums to feel like themes. There are no rules, there's no format, there's nothing. There's just good music and if I feel it, I'm putting it out.' The singer confirmed she's also set to explore reggae music, saying: 'That is happening… I feel like I have no boundaries. I've done everything - I've done all the hits, I've tried every genre - now I'm just, I'm wide open. I can make anything that I want.'  Rihanna explained: 'I can't listen to my voice, you know. Oh, I'm nervous before even getting in the car to go to something, It can be devastating.  'And when I pull up to the red carpet, I'm like…Are you kidding me? I left the Grammys one time. Left! In the middle of my hair and make-up. My hair half up, half of my lash on…' On the success of her cosmetic brand, she added: 'I'm shocked by people saying, ''Oh my god, what made you think of making make-up for black girls?'' I'm like, What? You thought this was like a marketing strategy? Like I'm a genius?  'It's shocking most of the time, then it turns into disappointment that this is groundbreaking right now. In my mind, this was just normal.'The post Rihanna vows to have four kids with or without a partner as she graces the cover of British Vogue appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

You created everything," he began in the video. He then proceeded to ask God to make the virus come and inflict him. He added that he is laying his body down as God instructed him.  This comes days after the king issued a spiritual warrant of arrest for COVID-19 (read here). Watch the video below.       View this post on Instagram         “God, infect me with Covid-19 and leave the rest of the world out of it,” King of Iwo offers himself as a sacrifice to save the world from coronavirusA post shared by Lindaikejiblog (@lindaikejiblogofficial) on Mar 30, 2020 at 10:15pm PDTThe post God, infect me with Covid-19 and leave the rest of the world out of it, Oluwo of Iwo offers himself as a "sacrifice" to save the world from coronavirus (video) appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

President Buhari Succumbs To Public Pressure, Signs COVID-19 Regulations 2020

President Buhari Succumbs To Public Pressure, Signs COVID-19 Regulations 2020

After intense pressure from the Nigerian public especially from senior legal practitioners and other prominent citizens, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday announced the signing into law of the COVID-19 Regulations.

Sections 2, 3 and 4 of the Quarantine Act (CAP Q2 LFN 2004) conferred such powers on President Buhari.

It was the legal framework needed to enforce the lockdown order in Lagos, Ogun and the FCT issued by Buhari on Sunday during a nationwide broadcast.
The announcement was made on Monday night by Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

President Buhari had addressed Nigerians on the outbreak and continued spread of Coronavirus 35 days after the country's first case was recorded.

A flurry of criticisms over his silence and perceived lack of concern on the damage caused by the pandemic had pushed him to speak.

Recall that earlier on Monday, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, had said that the lockdown order could not be enforced except it was backed by a law.

He said, "No doubt, the President is empowered to adopt any measure deemed fit to combat the dangerous disease but such measure have to be spelt out in a Regulation made pursuant to section 305 of the constitution or under the Quarantine Act.

"Otherwise the presidential order on restriction of movement in the affected areas cannot be enforced by the police."

Another lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, while reiterating Falana's position, in fact vowed to challenge the illegality of Buhari’s action in court.

He said, "After a deep reflection on President Muhammadu Buhari's decision to lock down all movements in Lagos, Ogun and Abuja by presidential fiat for 14 days, I have resolved to challenge this unconstitutional action in court.

"No responsible, democratic and civilised country will throw its constitution and laws into the dustbin in an effort to tackle a pandemic like COVID-19 the way President Buhari has done. Freedom of movement is a fundamental right guaranteed by Section 41 of the constitution.

"While it is conceded that this right is not absolute, Section 45 of the constitution is clear to the effect that freedom of movement can only be taken away in the manner allowed by a law that is reasonably justifiable in a democratic society. Buhari has not relied on any law.

"If Buhari is convinced that extraordinary measures are needed to contain Coronavirus, the proper action would have been for him to issue an instrument published in the official gazette of the government and make a proclamation of a state of emergency in Lagos, Ogun and Abuja."

Also adding his voice to the issue earlier on Monday, Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, said that President Buhari had no constitutional backing to declare a total lockdown of Lagos, Ogun and Abuja.

He said, "The worst development I can conceive is to have a situation where rational measures for the containment of the Corona pandemic are rejected on account of their questionable genesis.
"So, before this becomes a habit, a question: does President Buhari have the powers to close down state borders? We want clear answers. We are not in a war emergency.
"We need to exercise collective vigilance, and not compromise the future by submitting to interventions that are not backed by law and constitution."

However, earlier defending Buhari’s declaration of a lockdown in all three cities, Nigeria's Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, said that the President did not need any special legal framework to have the order enforced as the Quarantine Act already covered that.

Malami said, “The correct position remains that the President acted rightfully under the powers conferred on him by the Quarantine Act 1990 CAP 384 LFN.

"Section 3 of the Act enables the President to declare any part of Nigeria as an infected area. Section 4 of the Act further empowers the President to make regulations to prevent the introduction, spread and transmission of any dangerous infectious disease."

But with Buhari’s latest move on Monday, Malami now stands alone on the matter.

Enforcement of the order is now expected to commence in Lagos and FCT while it will take effect in Ogun from April 3.
